About Dr. Ortiz

Susan Ortiz, MD is an expert in the art and science of healing.
Board-certified physician in Physical Medicine and Pain Medicine.
Over 20 years of experience in conventional and complementary/alternative medicine.

Originally from New York City, I attended medical school at  the State University of New York, Brooklyn, NY.  Upon graduation, I completed an internship in Internal Medicine at  St. Vincent’s Hospital In Greenwich Village, NYC.  I chosed to specialize in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and completed my residency at the Rusk Institute at New York University.  I was asked to stay on at New York University as a faculty member training residents in my specialty.  In addition to this, I maintained a private practice and worked as a consultant.

The events of 9/11 caused a shift within me and I gradually came to the decision to leave New York City where I had spent my entire life.  In 2004, I moved to Bangor, Maine where I now practice.

My decision to become a medical doctor was motivated by a desire to help people heal.  My mother’s family is from Puerto Rico and there is a  tradition of natural healing  which she used to raise 5 healthy children.  In college as a biology major and in medical school, I learned the scientific method and in residency, the application of science to diagnosing and treating disease.

As time went on, I began to see some of the limitations of modern medicine.  There were patients who did not respond to medications or who actually became sicker from them.  There was something missing and increasingly, there was less and less time to spend with patients.  Luckily, my background allowed me to appreciate other viewpoints on health and healing.  In time, I met several physicians who were integrating acupuncture and other global healing modalities into their medical practice with great results.  This allowed me to formulate a vision of myself as a doctor and a healer.

I have studied many systems, including:

Medical Acupuncture: UCLA – 2001
Tan Balance Method acupuncture
Mind-Body Medicine – Harvard
Energy Medicine – Eden
Myofascial Release – Barnes
Body Talk
Conscious Body/Voice Dialogue
Qigong

Meditation

As I have opened myself to these opportunities, I have been blessed with intuitive and healing gifts that allow me to help people in ways I could not have imagined.
